Brief History of Clan Mackenzie
The Mackenzies trace their ancestry to the Celtic chieftain Gilleoin of the Aird, from whom Kenneth of Eilean Donan emerged in 1267 as a prominent Highland leader. His stronghold at the mouth of Loch Duich became the cradle of the Clan Mackenzie, whose name would come to embody loyalty, courage, and service to Scotland.
By the 15th century, under Alexander Mackenzie of Kintail, known as “Alexander the Upright”, the clan rose to prominence through loyalty to the Crown during the downfall of the Lords of the Isles. For his allegiance, Alexander received royal charters confirming his lands directly from the King, establishing the Mackenzies as one of the most powerful and independent clans in the Highlands.
Over the next two centuries, the Mackenzies expanded their influence across Ross-shire and beyond, forming strategic alliances through marriage and gaining recognition for their leadership and fairness. In 1609, John Mackenzie of Kintail was appointed to the Privy Council and created Lord Mackenzie of Kintail; in 1623, his son was raised to the dignity of Earl of Seaforth. John’s brother, Sir Roderick Mackenzie of Coigach, known as the Tutor of Kintail, founded the Cromartie line from which the present Chief descends.
The Mackenzies played key roles in Scotland’s great national struggles, supporting the Stuart kings and the Jacobite cause. Though their castles, Eilean Donan and Brahan, were besieged and their estates forfeited, the clan’s loyalty and resilience became legend. By the late 18th century, the Mackenzie name lived on in regiments such as the Seaforth Highlanders, whose men carried their tartan and motto, Luceo non uro (“I shine, not burn”), across the world.
To this day, Castle Leod remains the heart of Mackenzie heritage and the home of the clan’s Chief, John Mackenzie, the Earl of Cromartie. Lord Cromartie continues to uphold the clan’s proud legacy and its enduring connection to the Highlands, Tìr nam beann, nan gleann, ’s nan gaisgeach, the land of the mountains, glens, and heroes.
